A Perfect Utopian World?
In the World State, John the Savage is considered a "freak of society" because he quotes many literature authors such as William Shakespeare. As Bernard gains popularity from John, Bernard became more consumed by what he despised. John realizes how distort the World State becomed he tried to stop the flow of soma by stopping everyone from taking it. John eventually gets caught by the director and is eventually kicked out. In your opinion do you feel that the World State is as distorted as John sees it, is it a biased opinion, or how would it be perceived in your viewpoint?

I do feel that the World State is as distorted as John sees it. He is able to see the flaws and downfalls of their society since he was raised in a world that did not operate like the World State. He grew up with feelings and without the caste system or soma, so when John was brought into the "brave new world" he becomes deeply disturbed by how it is run. He tries to help the people by throwing the soma out of the window but they merely attacked him. He wants to free them from the drug because he sees it for what it really is, but the people who were conditioned in the World State know no different. To those who lived in the World State their whole lives they have been brainwashed and are content, but to others their world has many issues.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that the World State is distorted as John sees it. However, his perspective is identified as an outsider. How the World State functions is believed to be "normal". The people of the World State were brainwashed to believe that "their way of life" is ordinary. I feel that we can only see eye-to-eye with John considering he relates to our world/reality much more than the World State. We view the World State as corrupted and unjust due to the fact that it is much unlike ours. John is the closest thing that relates to our world which is why we view him more sympathetically. Who are we to say the World State is distorted when they were conditioned since birth to believe that what they are doing is right? They view John as abnormal and their way of living to be natural. We are only viewing the World State to be the complete opposite because it goes against our traditional ways of society. For instance, the way our society functions could appear to be abnormal to a handful of people. Our government, society and overall way of living is identified as normal as does the World State. So as before, the World State is not necessarily distorted, just corrupt in our perspectives because it goes against OUR version of normal.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do feel that the World State is distorted because although it may have the image of a perfect utopia from the outside it's not right when you take a closer look. In the World State everything about life is distorted even from the very beginning since babies are now bred in test tubes. Children are then trained at an early age to take soma pills whenever they feel sad in order for them to feel good again. The fact that the World State needs its citizens to constantly be on drugs in order to feel good already proves that the world these individuals live in is very different from what it once was.
