In chapter 8 of Alone Together, I really thought about how we are 'always on'. Turkle focuses on how technology is changing our relationships, and preparing us for the age of robots. She talks about how we can be on the other side of the world yet still know what is happening in our hometown. What people are doing, where they're going, and we're simply provided with this information by just checking Facebook or texting your best friend. Now, I'm sure you have all probably thought of this and if so, then why is it that we complain so much about going out, yet when we do we fail to really be consumed by where we are at the moment? We take pictures and text our friends about what we're doing but don't really make memories.
So why is it that we still want to be connected to others in a different place when we're nowhere near them, and the matters that are going on there, at the time, don't really pertain to us?
I think we all just get so used to communicating with friends, even though most of the time it is behind an electronic devise. When people go out on vacation, they don't want to have to come back and catch up on everything they missed when they were away. It's almost like taking a couple sick days off of school and coming back with loads of homework piled up on your desk.. It's overwhelming. Everyone always wants to stay in the loop with things their friends are doing because it makes them feel less lonely while they're away.
