This blog is semi-closed: anyone can read, but only invited guests can write. To participate in summer homework in 2013, you must send AFletcher an email requesting an invitation. At the meeting, I asked you to read the assignment on the blog so you could see what you were getting into before signing up; if you decide to participate, get the invitation so you can write.

Perception

After reading Amusing Ourselves to Death, I have come to better understand the role that appearances play in influencing people. For example, complete strangers can form complete opinions on you based on solely your appearance.  An attractive person will probably have a greater influence on you.  A heavily-tattooed male with piercings usually elicit a more negative response as opposed to a male with a plain appearance. Who would you trust more out of these people?
Appearances and how you present yourself can be a huge factor in how others treat you. This mentality can lead many to conform into social norms, like in how they talk or dress. How often have you seen a fashion magazine aim towards a younger female audience? Many magazines are aimed towards a female audience, especially younger generation that can be better influenced. How you are viewed can have a huge influence on how you run your life. Your appearance is probably the first thing a stranger can judge you on. However, I can tell you that looks don't matter, yet how you are perceived by other people can still be stuck in your mind.
Are looks really that important? Do you care about how others view you, as long as you are comfortable in your own body?

  1. It is very sad that the first thing you are judged by is your appearance. Our culture is so intent on looking good that they will go as far as doing plastic sugery to look good. People do crazy things just to be acepted by our culture. Is it really wort all that trouble?

  2. As much as I hate to say it, looks are incredibly important. You could be the nicest person, but if you dress like a slob it is all you will be remembered as. I try really hard not to judge someone based off of their looks, but there are times when I simply cannot help myself. There are some people who do not feel confident in their own bodies and spend thousands of dollars on making themselves feel better about what they look like. Then there are the people who do not care about what they look like, and those people are always so amazing. People shouldn't care about how others view them, they should care about how they view their themselves.
