Google is an enormous company and search engine. Who hasn't heard of Google? But just because
it is popular, that doesn't mean that it is positive. Yes, Google is a helpful tool, and it does
make finding information very easy. However, Google is affecting people by
making them less willing to read long articles or books. Reading is necessary to use the internet;
however, the type of reading done on the internet is not the same as reading a
book. Because the internet is often used
as a form of entertainment, people read the least amount possible in order to
use it. Often times I will find myself
purposely avoiding lengthy internet articles in favor of shorter, simplified
articles. This translates to less of a desire
to read books because we have become used to avoiding lengthy articles. Similarly, if one loses interest in a
website, they can just leave and go to a new website. Often times, I will lose interest in the book
I am reading and set it down in favor of other activities. It is clear that the internet and Google can lead
to bad reading habits.
