Prozac Nation

I read the book Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel where she talks about her struggles with bipolar disorder and eventually getting medicated with the anti-depressant Prozac. This book opened my eyes to how many people in the United States have prescriptions with this drug. Three hundred million prescriptions are filled every year for Prozac and other anti-depressants. Either we have a very large amount of depressed people or too many doctors are just handing out prescriptions for a serious drug. This begs the question of why a plethora of people turn to drugs that shut of their feelings instead of dealing with their problems through therapy or other stress relieving activies? I believe Huxley foresaw a future where drugs like soma are used to control people. The government in Brave New World actually encourages the intake of soma because it does not allow them to think for themselves even more. Any people questioning the government can be silenced with a simple pill that takes away their feelings. Could this be the future of our nation?
