Is This Our Future?
I have realized that the World State in Brave New World operates in a fashion that utilizes technology to a degree where our society today may come to. The everlasting development of advanced technology is fascinating. Though the United States is not as much as a totalitarian state as the World State is, we are built and ran on consumerism, like the World State. What good is a business industry if none of it's products are being consumed? The World State's system is functioned to tend to the needs and wants of their society as a whole. Drugs, money, sex, etc. are instantly there when desired. I feel that we are beginning to become like the World State of our own. We are not being conditioned like the World State does its citizens, but we are definitely getting there. There is a secret force out there that manipulates the many things that appeals to our society. What has this world come to? We are becoming more and more unintelligent every day due to the technology that is being introduced to us. Not only the technology is making us unintelligent, but it is the media that attempts to manipulate how we think and act. Nowadays, men look to sleep with women even if they don't know their name. People think abusing drugs, abusing weapons, or even putting other people down for no reason is cool. When was the last time you heard that cigarettes aren't that bad. Probably never, because currently, cigarettes have so many toxins and chemicals that will have you end up like the women with the hole in her neck ( no offense to her). About three or four decades ago, cigarettes weren't that bad. Or when was the last time saying that you had a house phone wasn't a little strange? It would be best to believe that the technology and other things condition us a whole. When was the last time you heard hip hop music, and there wasn't a rapper who didn't curse while just talking about all the money, clothes, b's (women) he has, and how he would fight or kill someone? Maybe never. I thought so. Is this really our future?

You make a very valid point! I thought about this myself. I think the purpose of the novel and the point Aldous Huxley was trying to make is so society is aware of what is going on, and what we're going to become if we allow our future to become this way. I find it fascinating that Huxley was able to predict what was going to happen if we allowed technology to run our lives over 70 years ago! We are becoming closer and closer to the type of totalitarian government the World State is based on. The government only tells us what they want us to know. Conspiracy theories everywhere. It sort of like our own government is striving for a type of life style we aren't aware of.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was reading I thought about how we as a society are very close to becoming what is described by Huxley. There are several passages in the book that show how technology is used for such simple things in their lives like playing as kids or taking a bath. This could be our society very quickly where a machine will have to throw a ball for any of us to want to go outside.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed the same thing while reading. Huxley predicted so many things that are happening today so long ago, it's quite amazing. He predicted things like greater sexual freedom, over population, brain-washing/sleep-teaching, and the use of mind altering drugs over 70 years ago! We are starting to become more and more like the World State. It's scary to think how the world will be future.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed the same thing when I read the book, Huxley makes it clear that ultimately technology will consume our lives & take over every little human responsibility. In the book, technology already took over an important "task", if not the most important "task" in the creation of a human being.
